More than 100 staff and children had to be evacuated over a fire at a Melbourne childcare centre. Emergency services responded to reports of a blaze at the Croydon Discovery Childcare and Education Centre in Melbourne’s east on Tuesday morning, police said. A laundry area in the Maroondah Highway facility caught fire about 8.50am. Multiple callers to triple-0 raised the alarm, a Fire Rescue Victoria spokeswoman said. Twelve firefighters arrived in seven minutes to find the building heavily smoke logged. The fire took under 30 minutes to control. Police and fire crews worked together to safely evacuate 102 people and the fire was quickly extinguished.
