A police officer is expected to undergo surgery after he was accidentally shot during an arrest attempt in Sydney’s Inner West overnight. Four police officers, two in plain clothes and two in uniform driving an unmarked police car approached a silver Honda sedan parked at a reserve in Earlwood around 10.40pm. Deputy Superintendent Paul Devaney said the officers involved had been conducting proactive patrols of the area when they attempted to “engage” with the couple. “They were engaged in a patrol for street level crime and violent crime, that is a known hot spot for crime and they were parked in an isolated position in the car park so that raised their suspicion,” he said. When police attempted to speak to the occupants of the car, the driver, a 26-year-old male, allegedly reversed, hitting a tree. In response, an 44-year-old constable fired his gun, with a fragment then striking another policeman, aged 27, in the forearm.
